This epic novel by Edward Rutherford spans centuries of generations against the backdrop of the history of New York City.  From the initial settlers, to the Revolutionary War, right up through the modern age and the attacks on the World Trade Center.  Definitely hooks you right away!  Don’t be turned off by the size of the book…it goes quickly!  -Recommended by Mary

Advent is the first of a proposed trilogy by James Treadwell about the return of magic to an enlightenment-blighted world.  The protagonist is a fifteen year old boy who has been troubled with a “imaginary friend” who is actually not imaginary.  He is sent from his troubled home after being suspended from his school to visit his flighty aunt, who lives in the gatehouse of a crumbling manor house.  His subsequent adventures, alternating with chapters set in the 16th century life of Johannes Faust, had me staying up until 1 AM to finish it.  I am eagerly waiting for the next installment!  -Recommended by Kate

I loved this book.  It made me smile and cry, it made me cheer for the protagonist and hope for a happy ending.  It made me think about all the youth that are going through the same thing.  I definitely recommend it! -Recommended by Maritza

Set in Appalachia, as seen through the eyes of an intelligent, independent young mother,  Dellarobia. The book has a strong storyline with global warming as an integral theme. It occasionally borders on the polemic, but Kingsolver writes such beautiful sentences,  that is easy to forgive.   The title refers both to the migratory path of the monarch butterflies, which instead of migrating to Mexico end up Appalachia, and Dellarobia’s growing realization that she needs to change her life. The powerful ending stayed with me for days. – Recommended by Suzanne
