1- Full-Time Library Assistant- Children’s Department
The Public Library of New London seeks an enthusiastic and friendly Library Assistant. This is a 35 hour a week, full time position with a variable schedule that includes daytime and evening hours and Saturdays in rotation.
This position reports to the Children’s Librarian.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares and presents children’s programs and story hours, including outreach programs held outside the library, under the direction of Children’s Librarian
- Prepares fliers, bookmarks, press releases and other publicity materials pertaining to children’s services.
- Updates children’s section of the Library website and contributes to Library social media, as assigned.
- Answers directional, procedure and policy questions of library patrons.
- Assists in monitoring security in children’s area.
- Prepares book displays and bulletin boards and helps keep the Children’s Room orderly and attractive.
- Answers telephone and provides telephone reference service.
- Processes new children’s materials.
- Shelves and files materials as necessary.
- Manages operations in the Children’s Room in the absence of the Children’s Librarian, under the direction of the Executive Director.
- Performs other tasks as assigned, may work in other areas as assigned.
Necessary Qualifications:
A four year college degree is required for this position, library, or early childhood education preferred. Previous work experience indicative of ability to work independently on support staff functions that require excellent computer skills. This position requires good writing ability, good interpersonal and communication skills and the desire to provide excellent customer service. Bilingual preferred, at a minimum, the ability to understand and to make one’s self understood to all Spanish speaking individuals. Position open until filled.
Salary: The salary is $16-$18/hour with a benefit package, including health insurance.

2- Substitute Library Assistant (Evenings & Weekends)
The Public Library of New London is accepting applications from enthusiastic individuals with excellent customer service skills and a commitment to public service for the position of Substitute Library Assistant. This position performs a wide variety of circulation and library-related tasks, works closely with the public by responding to inquiries and assisting with information and technology needs. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solvin and computer literacy skills. Salary $15.00/hour. No benefits.
Some College preferred; and previous library experience a plus.
